A leaking fuel rod can sometimes be repaired, but more usually a replacement assembly is needed (with matching remaining enrichment level). Cost components include:
- Cost of the replacement fuel assembly
- Cost penalty and/or replacement power from reduced power operation or unscheduled shutdown
- Higher operation and maintenance costs from mitigating increased radiation levels
