Where reprocessing is not used, irradiated fuel elements are placed in specialised stainless steel, copper, or titanium canisters. These are placed in above-ground cooled storage for the short to medium term, with the intention of deep underground burial at a later date when radioactive decay shall have reduced the heat output sufficiently.
