In the late 1940s, many potential methods for plutonium separation were considered:
- Precipitation
- Ion exchange
- Solvent extraction
- Zone melting / slagging
- Halide volatility
Solvent extraction proved most suitable, mainly because all streams are liquid, allowing continuous processing and easier containment.
