In the once-through approach, irradiated fuel is treated as waste. The fuel is removed from the reactor, cooled in ponds for several years, and then placed in robust containers for long-term storage and eventual deep geological disposal. This is hardly a “cycle” at all — the fissile material remaining in the fuel is not recovered.
Countries that have adopted or lean towards the once-through approach include the United States, Sweden, and Finland.
