France’s Cigeo (Centre industriel de stockage geologique) project is planned for the Meuse/Haute-Marne area near Bure in eastern France:
- Deep disposal in Callovo-Oxfordian clay at approximately 500 metres depth
- Managed by Andra (Agence nationale pour la gestion des dechets radioactifs)
- Designed to accept both HLW (vitrified waste from reprocessing) and long-lived ILW
- Clay formation provides a natural barrier with very low permeability
