The NDA role is strategic: it establishes the overall approach, allocates budgets, sets targets and monitors progress. It does not have a hands-on role in cleaning up facilities. Rather, it delivers the mission through others, primarily Site Licence Companies (SLCs).
NDA is responsible for:
- Decommissioning and cleaning up nuclear facilities
- Ensuring that all waste products, both radioactive and non-radioactive, are safely managed
- Implementing policy on the long-term management of nuclear waste
- Developing UK-wide strategy and plans for nuclear Low Level Waste (LLW)
- Scrutinising the decommissioning plans of EDF Energy, who own the operating fleet of Advanced Gas Cooled Reactor (AGR) nuclear power stations (the AGR fleet is progressively transferring to the NDA group for decommissioning, with Hunterston B and Hinkley Point B on track to complete spent fuel removal during 2025)
