Worldwide, many legacy mine and mill sites operated under older, less stringent environmental standards. Major remediation programmes have been initiated, most notably:
- The Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) program in the United States
- Remediation of sites operated by the former Soviet-German Wismut company in Thuringia and Saxony, Germany
