Lesson 6 6.12 Waste Treatment and Conditioning

Synroc (Synthetic Rock) is an alternative to borosilicate glass vitrification for HLW. It involves transforming the wastes into a synthetic rock similar in structure and composition to natural minerals. Some of these minerals have proven their stability in natural conditions over geological timescales. Synroc potentially offers:

  • Greater long-term durability than glass
  • Higher resistance to leaching
  • Better radiation stability
